CTE, CCTC, International and Supplemental Standards Added to the EdGate Repository of Standards

ECS LogoAs the Career Technical Education (CTE) and the Common Career Technical Core (CCTC) initiatives are taking center stage around the country, EdGate Correlation Services has committed to adding these standards to the EdGate Repository of more than 2.5 million standards. The addition will help EdGate support educational publishers in their efforts to educate young people with the technical and employability skills needed in today’s economy.

Supporting publishers with International standards and supplemental standards licensing and correlation has always been a staple of EdGate’s offerings. However, many publishers have recently turned to EdGate for assistance, research and support in helping them navigate through the intricacies of the CTE and CCTC standards.

According to the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTE), 46 states and three territories have state-approved secondary CTE standards and 13 states and two territories have state-approved postsecondary standards. The state CTE standards are unique to each state. In 2012, with support from 42 states, the District of Columbia and Palau, the NASDCTE released the CCTC standards in an effort to create a consistent, shared set of standards that can be used by a student regardless of where he or she lives. States can choose to use the CCTC as a benchmark, voluntarily adopt the standards or disregard them as they see fit. 

The CCTC standards represent a complex web of standards containing 16 “Career Clusters,” which are groups of jobs and industries related by skills or products. Within each cluster, there are “Career Pathways” that correspond to a collection of courses and training opportunities to prepare students for a given career.

Students, parents and educators can use Career Clusters to help focus education plans towards obtaining the necessary knowledge, competencies and training for success in a particular career pathway. It is vital to note that the CCTC are benchmark standards that define what a student needs to know and be able to do at the end of a program of study, whereas the CTE state standards are course-level standards that are more occupationally or job focused.

The Repository houses course specifications for certificate examinations in England, Wales, Ireland and India for AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance); Cambridge (International General Certificate of Secondary Education); Edexcel (International British education and examination board); OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations); CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education); and CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations).

Supplemental standards have experienced a boost as well with the addition of ACT College and Career Readiness; HECAT modules developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; College Board Advanced Placement Courses; Common Core Essential Elements; Florida Course Descriptions; GED 2014 Assessment Targets; and new assessment standards for Texas Alternate (STAAR), Florida Alternate (Access Points), New York Alternate (NYSSA) and PARCC Assessments.

The EdGate Repository houses more than 1,500 organization subjects including National, International, Supplemental and Common Core State Standards. The subjects covered include Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and PE, World Languages, English Language Learners, Early Childhood Education, Career Technical Education, Media Technology and Professional Development.
